What you’ll see

What you’ll see in Ávila

Ávila sits about an hour and a quarter west of Madrid — a walled city ringed by some of Europe’s best-preserved medieval walls, which still encircle the whole old town. Inside them stand a Gothic cathedral built into the ramparts, Romanesque churches and the birthplace of Santa Teresa; the old town and its extramural churches are listed by UNESCO. At roughly 1,130 meters it is the highest provincial capital in Spain. With your own car and driver, a full day is plenty to walk the walls and the old town — with time left for a chuletón steak and Ávila’s famous yemas.

A day in Ávila

It’s only a suggestion — the car and driver stay with you all day, so you set the order and the pace.

  1. Morning

We collect you from your Madrid hotel or address and drive west, arriving in about an hour and a quarter. Start with a walk along the medieval walls and through the old gates — the Puerta del Alcázar and the Puerta del Carmen — that lead into the walled old town.

  2. Late morning

Head into the old town for the Gothic Catedral de Ávila, built into the walls, and the Plaza del Mercado Chico, the main square. Wander the surrounding streets past Renaissance palaces such as the Palacio de los Dávila and the Palacio de los Velada.

  3. Lunch

Break for a relaxed lunch — Ávila is known for its chuletón, a hearty grilled beef steak, and the yemas de Santa Teresa sweets for afterwards. There’s no clock to watch; the driver waits while you eat.

  4. Afternoon

In the afternoon see the Romanesque Basílica de San Vicente and the Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás, then finish at the Humilladero de los Cuatro Postes just outside the walls — the classic viewpoint for the whole panorama of Ávila’s ramparts before you head home whenever you’re ready.

Good to know

Ávila — good to know

What is there to see in Ávila in one day?

In a full day you can comfortably see Ávila’s main sights: the complete medieval walls, the Gothic cathedral built into them, the Basílica de San Vicente, the birthplace of Santa Teresa and the Cuatro Postes viewpoint across the ramparts. The old town and its walls are a UNESCO World Heritage site, so much of the pleasure is simply walking them.

How much time do you need in Ávila, and where does the driver drop us off?

A full day is ideal — with about an hour and a quarter’s drive each way, you still have five or six hours in the city. Ávila’s old town is walled and largely pedestrian, so your driver drops you near a gate such as the Puerta del Alcázar and picks you up wherever suits, handling the parking. From there you can walk the walls and reach the cathedral and main square on foot.

Can we combine Ávila with another destination in the same day?

Yes — because the car and driver are yours for the day, many guests pair Ávila with Segovia, roughly an hour away, or stop at El Escorial, just under an hour on and on the way back toward Madrid. Just tell us when you book so we plan the route and timings; it’s the same private car, at one fixed price agreed up front.

Is Ávila worth it as a day trip from Madrid?

For most visitors, yes — Ávila is one of the most complete walled cities in Spain, about an hour and a quarter away, and a single day covers the medieval walls, the cathedral and Santa Teresa’s old town without feeling rushed. Going privately means no train times to catch and no shared bus, so you leave and return exactly when you like.
